Samtengang Trek

This Samtengang Winter Trek is a short and pleasant journey from Punakha to Wangduephodrang Dzongkhag. It is a fairly easy trek as the altitude only ranges between 1100-1900 meters and the climate is warm throughout the hike. The path takes you through forests of rhododendron and oak, through the villages of Sha and Chungsakha, and across the longest foot bridge in Bhutan. While this trek is available throughout the winter the best times to embark on it are between March-April and September and October. The trail is approximately 54km in length. Itinerary
Upon arrival at Paro International Airport, you will be greeted by your guide and driver, who will transfer you to your hotel. In the evening, you are free to explore the charming town of Paro at your leisure, taking in the serene atmosphere and perhaps taking a stroll around the town.
Begin with a visit to Ta-Dzong (Watch Tower), now the national museum of Bhutan. Then, explore Rinpung Dzong, situated on a hilltop just below the museum. In the afternoon, drive to Drukgyal Dzong and visit Kyichu Lhakhang, one of Bhutan’s oldest temples, built in the 7th century.
After breakfast, depart from Paro and head to Thimphu. In the afternoon, visit Tashichhodzong, National Memorial Chorten, National Handicraft Emporium, and Changlingmithang ground to watch the traditional archery match. In the evening, enjoy a leisurely walk around town at your own pace.
Drive to Khuruthang in Punakha. Upon arrival, you will enjoy a delicious lunch. After Lunch, you will visit Punakha Dzong, the former capital of Bhutan, which is situated at the picturesque confluence of the Phochhu and Mochhu rivers.
The journey continues with a drive to Punakha. Your trek begins after reaching Punakha, with a gradual climb through chirpine forests. Along the way, you’ll have the opportunity to visit Dompala, a beautiful village nestled beside the trail.
Today’s scenic trek is a moderate 14km, taking 5-6 hours. The trail leads you through vibrant rhododendron and oak forests. En route, you will pass by Chime Lhakhang, a fertility temple.
The 13km, 5-hour trek will take you through the village of Sha in Wangdue Phodrang District.
The trail will take you to the road head, from where you will drive to Wangdue Phodrang and enjoy lunch at the Guest House. After lunch, continue your journey to Thimphu. En route, stop to visit the Druk Wangyel Monastery, located at the Dochula Pass.
Begin your day with a visit to the historic Simtokha Dzong, a significant cultural landmark in Bhutan. Later, head to the Wood Craft and Painting School, where you’ll have the opportunity to witness the preservation of traditional Bhutanese art and crafts, keeping alive the country’s rich cultural heritage.
